It’s unfortunate, but most of the reason that you’re paying more money at the pump is due to oil speculators. They send the oil prices up and up and when they’re coupled with other problems, with the economy, they can make the market very volatile. They can also send the gas prices soaring and the stock market skidding downward.

The House bill regarding oil speculation will help to discourage that. The White House has threatened to veto the bill, so it might not actually become law, but Congress likes the idea of stopping the speculation, both in the oil market and in other commodity markets.

There have also been trading abuses out there and the bill would help to get those stopped. There would be more regulation, regarding the speculation on any commodity, in any market and the thought is that this would help to more easily stabilize the market.

Global Insight has made a decision to allow itself to be acquired by IHS. IHS is a leading source of insight and information on a global scale, and Global Insight deals with the forecasting of financial and economic analysis.

Both companies appear as though they will work very well together, and they’re committed to the same kinds of projects and goals and aspirations. So, that ensures that there should be little dissonance within the company and during the acquisition. With a lot of clients throughout the world, both companies have the opportunity to grow and prosper, and if they are joined with one another there will be higher chances of seeing them continue to flourish. This is good news for the clients that they have and the people who rely on what the two companies can offer them.

Certainly not everyone agrees with the acquisition, but there are many more in favor than there are individuals opposed to it.

bridge.jpg

Many of the bridges in Missouri have a lot of problems. They’re old and they aren’t as solid or reliable as they used to be, or as they should be. That’s bad, but what’s worse is that there is no longer any private financing to help fix the bridges and make sure that they don’t fall down or come apart, potentially injuring or killing a lot of people.

There was a plan for some private financing, but all of a sudden that plan got changed, and that was mostly caused by the economy. There is so much uncertainty, in the stock market and the rest of the economy today, that the people who were going to offer financial help for the Missouri bridges backed out, over fears that they wouldn’t have enough financial backing to do what they had planned.

While it remains likely that Missouri will get its bridges fixed, it’s going to have to wait a little while.

There are all kinds of scams out there and usually they target elderly people over the phone, or they find a way to target investors. However, one of the newest scams is using fake DOT stationary to target truckers.

The letter they receive asks that they fax their financial information, so that the procurement plan for 2009’s first quarter can be finalized. You should never give your financial information out, in such a way.

The DOT doesn’t request procurement information or financial information in this way – they only do it in regard to specific contracts. On the OIG Website, there is information about the fraud and what you should do if you receive such a letter. There is also information for people who have already given their financial information out based on the letter and what they should do to protect themselves. The investigation is ongoing and this isn’t the first time that the DOT stationary has been used.

dollar.jpgBetween Ike and Gustav, more than $222 million in damage has been done to the transportation infrastructure, within the United States. This includes both bridges and roads, as well as, other ways that goods and services are moved around the country.

Ike has caused gas shortages in many parts of the country, including those that were not directly affected by the hurricane itself. The Federal Government will end up picking up the tab for most of the damage, especially in places like Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas, which were the hardest hit.

Louisiana has already received over $5 million in damages, from the Government for the storms. Gustav actually did more damage, with a preliminary estimate of $127 million, while Ike comes in with an estimate of $94 million. Either way, however, the storms have made a serious impact, on getting goods and services to people who need them. With that being the case, and coupled with the rising price of oil, the economy looks as though it will be struggling for some time.
