There are other issues that contribute to the problems the original article points to. Agriculture in the US is heavily influenced by a huge corporation called Monsanto, which originally developed the 'terminator technology' in the late 90's. This technology created seed that would produce sterile crops that would force farmers to buy new seed with each subsequent harvest. Granted, this technology was banned for commercial use, but you can see how it could quickly increase the cost of production of any crop. There is also technology coined 'zombie' whereby a farmer would have to pay for a chemical to allow the seeds saved from one crop to be viable - again increasing costs and contributing to poverty and hunger as a result. I think if one is truly concerned about sustainability and preserving our rainforests, one will look at the big picture of the agricultural industry in our country...one good resource for this is an organization called the Organic Consumers Association: http://www.organicconsumers.org/

I'm going to have to go with Mitchel on this one.

I'm looking into diesel alternatives out of current light oils. After all diesels were originally designed to run on peanut oil. But after buying a truck (81 Toyota Diesel...Don't ask) that had nothing but bio-diesel run in it. I am going to have to say that after replacing fuel filters every 300 miles or so bio-diesel just isn't the way to go. Not only has the issue with clogged fuel filters gone away but it starts up alot easier on cold days and my fuel economy shot way up. Not to mention a perceptible addition to the proverbial "kick in the pants" on acceleration, especially under a load.

Hype or no. If your vehicle isn't designed or converted to run on veggie oil. Stay the hell away from it. Same goes for bio-diesel.

I'm all for free speech, However articles like this are based on an opinion of the writer. For all that are reading this, do yourself a favor and educate yourself. Learn all of the facts before you make stray remarks or blog posts.

Doug:

What free market are you talking about? Here in the real world oil companies are subsidized by the government. Regulated at every turn. Then forced to justify everything they do in congressional witch hunts.

A free market doesn't work like that. I'm sick of liberals claiming that under Bush we had a free market. Our economy is being crushed by regulation, taxation, and oddly subsidies. Get government out of our lives, out of business, and back under control before we turn into france.

Reuters reports that all over the US, "soaring corn and soy prices on top of rising construction costs and tight credit markets have pushed about a dozen U.S. biofuel plants to file for bankruptcy protection, experts said." Moreover and more importantly, more scientists are in agreement that both ethanol and biodiesel do more harm than good to the environment.

On the other hand, as the cleanest-burning alternative, the California Energy Commission found that Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) produces 23% lower emission than diesel and 30% lower than gasoline. Natural Gas is also the consistently cheaper alternative to rising fuel prices. More and more, energy sustainability discussions are beginning to include Natural Gas as a viable, economically-sound alternative.
