Rhode Island Restricts Two Bridges From Large Trucks

The Pell bridge is still open to truckers, but two others have closed.

A new law in Rhode Island restricts large trucks from driving on two of the state’s bridges.
Governor Donald Carcieri signed a bill that forbids any vehicle with more than two axles, or combination vehicle with more than two axles per unit from crossing the following two bridges:

State Route 24 bridge over the Pawtucket River
Interstate 95 bridge over the Sakonnet River

Signs will be posted to alert truckers.  Violation of the new restrictions will result in a $3,000 fine for the first offense and $5,000 for repeat offenses.  The two axle limit is easier to enforce than pulling trucks over to check weight.  The hefty fines are to insure truckers “don’t drive on the bridges”

The law was enacted after concern over the corrosion of the bridges steel beams.  The change will protect the bridges from further damages until new beams can be installed.

This new law remains in effect  until June 12th, 2011.
