In Connecticut, there are considerations underway about reinstating some of the tolls on the roads. However, anyone wanting to do this will have an uphill battle because individuals who drive those roads quite often aren’t interested in paying money to do so.
The idea of reinstating the tolls came about for two reasons – because of the need for money in this flagging economy and also because there are serious problems with gridlock on many roads and it is hoped that having tolls will help reduce this, although it hasn’t been expressly stated how this would be the case. Those who study this issue do admit that placing tolls on existing toll-free roads would be a challenge and would likely meet with a great deal of public resistance.
The tolls disappeared in the 1980s, so most people have been used to toll-free roadways for a long time. Suddenly changing that would be problematic for a lot of reasons, and there are also other ideas that are being considered when it comes to how to raise more money without angering a lot of drivers and causing problems for them.
