Ballot Measures Risk State Budgets

A lot of the measures that were put on the ballots of many states were added before the current financial crisis. Most of them were for things like lowering certain kinds of taxes and creating a lot of additional programs that would be very expensive. That seemed to make sense at the time in an expanding economy that really was booming.

Now, though, the problem is that the economy is suffering but these tax cut and expansion projects are still on the ballot. That means that they will be voted on and they could pass. There’s no way to get them off the ballot now, and these states just have to hope that the measures won’t pass so they don’t have to be concerned with them anymore.

If they do pass, the states have to find a way to pay for them or have to lose the revenue that they would get if taxes hadn’t been cut –they will have to adjust other areas of the budget, and that means schools, healthcare for the indigent, and other things. It also means highway projects, so truckers might find themselves on some pretty rough roads.
